Wildfires are continuing to rage across parts of Europe, with France and Spain experiencing an exceptionally challenging season exacerbated by a unique combination of weather patterns. A historically wet winter, followed by very low rainfall since spring and three consecutive record-breaking summer heatwaves, has created ideal conditions for ignition, rapid spread, and resistance to control efforts. The Met Office has noted the unusual confluence of these factors across the continent.
Approximately 90% of wildfires originate from human activity, typically igniting what are known as 'fine fuels' – easily combustible materials such as dry grass, pine needles, and small twigs. This year, western Europe's prolonged drought has transformed this vegetation into highly flammable tinder. Fine fuel moisture code values have climbed above the 96th percentile this month, indicating extreme dryness. The preceding eighth-wettest winter on record for France and Spain paradoxically contributed to the problem by fostering an abundance of this vegetation, which subsequently dried out to dangerous levels.
Once established, fires can escalate into 'heavier fuels' like shrubs, roots, and deeper layers of forest litter. These materials burn at higher temperatures and for extended periods, capable of smouldering long after surface flames appear extinguished. They also generate towering columns of superheated air, known as pyrocumulonimbus clouds, which can carry embers vast distances, creating new spot fires far from the main blaze. While heavier fuels typically take longer to dry, this year's sustained dry spell and multiple heatwaves have parched them to an unprecedented degree.
The unpredictable nature of winds has further complicated firefighting operations. In France, the largest blaze in Gironde initially spread westward towards the coast on an easterly breeze. However, an abrupt shift to westerly winds on Friday pushed the fire back towards Bordeaux, forcing rapid strategic adjustments. Fires of this magnitude can also generate their own strong, gusty winds and downdrafts. These fire-generated winds contribute to erratic behaviour, making it extremely difficult for emergency services to predict the fire's direction and intensity.
Recent showers and thunderstorms near the major fires in France and Spain on Saturday brought minimal rainfall and may have, in some instances, worsened conditions. Rain evaporating beneath storm clouds cools the air, making it denser and causing it to sink rapidly to the ground. These downdrafts can then spread in all directions, fuelling sudden and unpredictable fire movements. Furthermore, cloud-to-ground lightning, particularly without accompanying rainfall, poses a risk of igniting new blazes, adding another layer of complexity to the ongoing crisis.
Looking ahead, high pressure is expected to persist across much of Europe, delaying any significant, albeit unevenly distributed, rainfall until the end of the week. This atmospheric pattern also increases the likelihood of a fourth summer heatwave, meaning the threat of further large-scale wildfires is expected to continue well into August. UK residents planning travel to affected regions should monitor local news and official advice closely. The Met Office has indicated no direct impact on the UK's immediate weather patterns from these European fires, though long-range forecasts for the UK will continue to be monitored for any indirect effects from continental heat.
