Rail passengers travelling between London Euston and Milton Keynes Central face considerable changes to their journeys over the upcoming Easter bank holiday weekend. Network Rail has announced that essential engineering work will lead to significant disruptions, with services affected from Friday, 29th March, through to Monday, 1st April.
The planned works are part of a broader programme to upgrade infrastructure and improve the reliability of the West Coast Main Line. During this period, sections of the line will be closed, necessitating the replacement of train services with buses on various routes. This will inevitably extend journey times and may require passengers to change transport modes multiple times.
Travellers are being strongly urged to consult National Rail Enquiries or their train operator's website before setting off. Advanced planning is crucial, especially for those with specific travel plans or connecting journeys, as alternative routes and replacement services will be in operation. The scale of the work means that even routes not directly closed could experience knock-on effects.
A spokesperson for Network Rail emphasised the necessity of the works, stating that the upgrades are vital for maintaining a safe and efficient railway. The improvements are also intended to prepare the network for future developments, including connections with the HS2 high-speed rail project. While acknowledging the inconvenience to passengers, they highlighted that bank holidays are often chosen for such large-scale projects due to typically lower passenger volumes compared to regular working weeks.
The disruptions will impact services operated by Avanti West Coast and London Northwestern Railway, among others that utilise this busy corridor. Passengers should anticipate longer travel times and potentially crowded replacement services. It is also advisable to allow extra time for journeys and consider if travel can be postponed to avoid the affected period.
