A former assistant principal in Virginia, USA, is facing trial on charges of felony child neglect following an incident where a six-year-old student shot his teacher. Ebony Parker is accused of disregarding several warnings from staff members that the young student had a loaded firearm at Richneck Elementary School on 6th January, 2023, prior to the shooting.
The incident saw teacher Abby Zwerner seriously injured after being shot by the pupil in her classroom. Zwerner subsequently filed a £39.5 million lawsuit against the school board, alleging negligence on the part of school officials, including Parker, for failing to act on information that the child posed a threat.
Court documents reveal that at least three staff members warned Parker about the student's possession of a gun on the day of the shooting. Despite these warnings, it is alleged that no immediate action was taken to search the child or remove him from the school environment. The grand jury indictment against Parker was unsealed earlier this month, leading to her arrest and subsequent release on a £3,950 bond.
The case has drawn significant attention across the United States, highlighting ongoing concerns about gun violence in schools and the responsibilities of school administrators in preventing such tragedies. The prosecution will need to demonstrate that Parker's alleged negligence directly contributed to the harm suffered by the teacher. Her defence is expected to challenge the extent of her culpability and the information available to her at the time.
This trial follows previous legal proceedings related to the shooting. The child's mother, Deja Taylor, was sentenced to two years in state prison last year for felony child neglect, after admitting that she had stored the gun in a manner accessible to her son. The child himself, due to his age, was not charged in connection with the shooting.
