Passengers on a recent 12-day expedition cruise from Reykjavik, Iceland, to Greenland witnessed a total solar eclipse. The voyage, facilitated by New Scientist Discovery Tours and Aurora Expeditions, culminated in the viewing from Hare fjord, part of Greenland's Kangertittivaq fjord system.
The cruise ship, Sylvia Earle, named after a marine biologist, accommodated 130 passengers and was designed for smooth travel. It featured a focus on sustainability, including a pledge of carbon neutrality and opportunities for citizen science projects.
Jamie Carter, an onboard eclipse expert, described the challenge of selecting a location due to narrow paths of totality and frequent clouds in Greenland. The decision to anchor in Hare fjord proved successful, offering an unobstructed view of the eclipse, unlike some disappointed tourists along Iceland's coastline.
