A family-run metalworks business near Rettendon, Essex, was destroyed last week in an explosion that resulted in the loss of £1m worth of equipment. The blast occurred at Highlands Farm on Friday, following a fire that spread through an industrial complex to a fertiliser store.
More than 100 firefighters responded to the blaze on Southend Road. The unit storing fertiliser exploded approximately an hour after fire crews were called at 16:50 BST.
Tony Maher, who operates Metal Profiles with his three children and 16 staff members, stated that the entire row of industrial units where their business was located has been flattened. Other businesses, including audiovisual events company Spotlight Sound and critical care charity Basics Essex, also sustained damage.
Four firefighters were taken to hospital with minor injuries, and a further 16 received treatment for issues such as hearing loss. All have since been discharged. A comprehensive multi-agency investigation, involving the Health and Safety Executive, has commenced.
