Fifa president Gianni Infantino has been told to release all documents relating to his controversial plan to sell off a stake in the World Cup. The demand comes in a letter sent by Football Association chair Debbie Hewitt, who is also a Fifa vice-president.
Hewitt's letter also calls for a written explanation regarding the cancelled suspension of United States forward Folarin Balogun at the World Cup. Balogun was allowed to play against Belgium in the last 16 despite receiving a straight red card in a previous match.
The letter, also addressed to Fifa secretary general Mattias Grafstrom, raises accusations of governance failures and a breakdown in culture within the world football governing body. Infantino has faced increasing pressure over his aborted Fifa Forward Enterprise (FFE) proposal, which would have seen 21% of a new company managing commercial and ticketing rights, including World Cups, sold to a private investment firm.
The FFE proposal was scrapped after widespread opposition from national associations. Hewitt's letter suggests an independent review into how FFE was conceived and how the private investment was put to tender. Infantino is expected to make all documents available before the next Fifa Council meeting on 15 October.
