A revival of David De Silva’s 'Fame the Musical' is currently breathing new life into the story of aspiring performers at the Theatre Royal Plymouth. This production, featuring a book by Jose Fernandez, music by Steve Margoshes, and lyrics by Jacques Levy, is directed and choreographed by Tom Jackson Greaves.
The show, which previously had its UK and European stage premiere at the same venue in 1995, is described as capturing the intense effort and determination of students at a New York City performing arts school. Shanay Holmes takes on the role of Miss Sherman, providing narration and powerful vocals throughout the four-year cycle depicted.
The production incorporates nods to the 1980s with elements like leg warmers and the sound of tape recorders. While storylines have been adjusted and some songs cut, the show is noted for its energetic cast and its portrayal of both the demanding work and the collaborative spirit among the students.
