Families can access free food this summer, including surplus groceries from supermarkets that can be taken home. These options do not always require a food bank referral or proof of benefits.
The Community Fridge Network, coordinated by environmental charity Hubbub, includes over 700 community fridges across the UK. These fridges are open to everyone and are not means-tested, allowing people to take home surplus food such as fruit, vegetables, bread, and bakery products. This food can originate from supermarkets, local businesses, producers, households, and gardens.
In England, families can also investigate their council’s Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme. Department for Education guidance for 2026 to 2027 suggests councils may complement holiday provision with additional support, including food hampers for families to take home. Eligibility for HAF primarily covers children who qualify under existing benefits-related free school meals rules, though local authorities can use up to 15% of their funding for additional school-age children they believe could benefit.
For summer 2026, Morrisons and Kellogg's are offering a free breakfast promotion. The previous 'Ask for Ellen' free crumpet initiative is not currently live, according to Warburtons.
