A 66-year-old woman from Torfaen, Wales, has collapsed and died while waiting to be seen by her GP, prompting concerns about the quality of care provided by the surgery. Jaqueline Watkins, from Llanyravon, had been feeling unwell at home for several days before contacting her GP practice for an appointment. Despite being given an appointment later in the week, Watkins collapsed while waiting in the waiting room of Llanyravon Surgery near Cwmbran on 18 June.
According to an inquest held at Gwent Coroners' Court, Watkins called the surgery earlier in the week but was given an appointment at 15:00 BST on Thursday, 18 June. She attended her appointment but collapsed in a chair while waiting to be called. Despite efforts from medical staff, Watkins could not be saved.
Watkins' family has raised concerns that there were 'missed opportunities' in GP care that need to be investigated. Her family said, 'We have many unanswered questions about the advice and care given.' A post-mortem examination was carried out, but no medical cause of death was given at the brief hearing.
The inquest has sparked concerns about the pressure on GP services and the need for improved access to healthcare. The UK's National Health Service (NHS) has been facing significant challenges in recent years, including staff shortages and increased patient demand.
