A household continues a yearly tradition of making cumquat jam, a ritual inherited from the mother of the current jam-maker. This tradition involves harvesting cumquats, which this year yielded six jars of jam.
The jam-making process, which once involved scavenging for fruit in friends' gardens, now relies on a cumquat tree in a yellow pot. This tree was a gift received 15 years ago after the mother's death, and it has since moved house twice with the family.
The jam is described as a connection to childhood memories, with the taste immediately transporting the maker back to their childhood home. The current household, now consisting of the jam-maker, their son, and a cat, has begun rationing their last jar of jam, eating it weekly instead of daily.
