Ofsted introduces independent review for school inspection complaints

Ofsted has launched a pilot for an independent complaints review service, allowing schools to challenge how their complaints are handled, including inspection findings.

  • Ofsted is piloting an independent complaints review service for schools.
  • The new service can recommend Ofsted re-examine a complaint, potentially leading to a new inspection if grading is involved.
  • The independent body conducting reviews will be contracted by the Department for Education and operate under Ombudsman Association standards.

Ofsted has announced the launch of a pilot for an independent complaints review service. This new service will allow schools to seek a review of how Ofsted has handled their complaints, including aspects linked to inspection findings.

The independent body undertaking the reviews will be contracted by the Department for Education (DfE) and will operate independently of Ofsted. It will be a member of the Ombudsman Association, adhering to its standards for case handling and impartiality.

The reviewer will be able to recommend that Ofsted re-examines a complaint. If a complaint involves grading, His Majesty's Chief Inspector (HMCI) can then decide to set aside a published report card and arrange a new inspection.

This pilot is the latest change to Ofsted's complaints process, following the introduction of a helpline for providers, a national hub for handling complaints, and new complaints panels.

Why this matters: This change introduces external oversight into Ofsted's complaints process, offering schools a new avenue to challenge inspection outcomes.

What this means for you: Schools will have a new independent route to challenge Ofsted's handling of complaints and potentially seek a review of inspection judgments.
