The family of a Wallasey lollipop man, affectionately known as 'Dave The Lollipop Man', have spoken of their profound devastation following the theft of floral tributes left in his honour. Dave York, who served generations of children in New Brighton, Wirral, passed away on 14 July at the age of 76. Tributes, including flowers, had been placed outside Mount Primary School, where he diligently performed his crossing patrol duties.
According to his daughter-in-law, Kerry, two individuals were captured on camera taking some of the flowers. She further stated that the culprits returned a second time to remove the remaining tributes. "It's incredibly upsetting and difficult to understand why anyone would do something so heartless," Kerry posted on social media, appealing for information. The family's distress was compounded by the fact that Mr. York's 13-year-old grandson witnessed the initial theft, attempting to intervene before the individuals drove off with the flowers.
Dave York, a retired painter and decorator, was a cherished figure in the community, remembered for his vibrant personality and dedication to the children he helped across the road. Kerry recalled how he would often adorn his hat and jacket with festive items, such as an elf at Christmas, which brought joy to the pupils. "He was just absolutely adored by not only the children from the school, but from us, his family," she shared, highlighting the deep affection felt for him.
The family emphasised that their primary goal in seeking information is not confrontation, but rather to comprehend the motivation behind such an insensitive act. The stolen tributes were placed directly opposite the school, a location imbued with memories of Mr. York's service to the community. While the flowers have been taken, the school has reportedly secured all the cards left in his memory, which the family expects to collect in September.
The incident has cast a shadow over what should be a period of mourning and remembrance for a man who dedicated a significant part of his life to ensuring the safety of local schoolchildren. The community, many of whom have fond memories of 'Dave The Lollipop Man', will undoubtedly share in the family's bewilderment and sadness over this disrespectful act.
