A farmer has issued a stark warning to dog owners, appealing for them to pick up their pets' waste to protect livestock. Clare Wise, a farmer, emphasised that the ingestion of dog mess by cattle and sheep can lead to severe health complications, including parasites, cysts, and even abortions in pregnant animals. Her plea underscores a widespread concern among the agricultural community regarding the impact of irresponsible dog ownership on farm welfare and livelihoods.
The issue stems from parasites such as Neospora caninum, which can be carried in dog faeces. If cattle ingest contaminated grass or feed, they can contract the parasite, leading to significant health problems. For pregnant cows, Neospora caninum is a major cause of abortion, resulting in considerable financial losses for farmers and immense emotional distress. Sheep are also vulnerable to various parasites transmitted through dog waste, which can compromise their health and productivity.
Ms Wise's message, 'Pick up your dog poo...it's not rocket science', highlights the simplicity of the solution to a complex problem. Farmers invest significant time, effort, and resources into maintaining healthy herds and flocks, and the presence of dog faeces on their land undermines these efforts.
