Nithi Yimruang, the father of the 14-year-old boy responsible for last week's school mass shooting in Thailand, knelt and bowed before the parents of 12-year-old victim Naphat Chaimar at her memorial service. Naphat's father, Pongthon Chaimar, accepted the apology and helped Mr Yimruang to his feet.
The shooter, Patchat Yimruang, killed his grandparents before shooting six people and injuring more than 30 at Debsirin Nonthaburi school. He then turned the gun on himself, bringing the total death toll to nine, including the attacker.
Mr Yimruang expressed his guilt and heartbreak, stating he had also lost his son and parents. He told the Guardian he does not understand his son's actions. Naphat's parents said they understood Mr Yimruang was also experiencing a difficult time.
King Maha Vajiralongkorn and Queen Suthida sent wreaths to Naphat's memorial, and the King has granted royal patronage for the victims and their families. This means the injured will receive royal care, and funeral rites for those killed will be royally sponsored.
