English forward Mason Greenwood has officially joined Turkish giants Fenerbahce, completing a four-year contract after transferring from French club Marseille. The move sees the 24-year-old make a significant step in his career, with Fenerbahce confirming the transfer fee as €39 million, equivalent to approximately £33.27 million. However, the Turkish club had previously indicated a total fee of €45 million, or around £38.36 million.
Greenwood's impressive performance in the 2025-26 Ligue 1 season for Marseille saw him net 16 goals, placing him joint-second in the Golden Boot standings behind Rennes' Esteban Lepaul. His form attracted considerable attention, with both presidential candidates for Fenerbahce, Aziz Yildirim (who was subsequently elected) and Hakan Safi, publicly expressing their interest in the player before the club's elections at the beginning of June.
Upon his arrival, Greenwood shared his enthusiasm, stating, "Hello Fenerbahce family, thank you so much for the support you have shown me. I am very happy to be here." This move marks his second permanent transfer since leaving Manchester United in July 2024 for Marseille in a £26.6 million deal. During his time with the French side, he scored 48 goals in 81 appearances across all competitions.
Manchester United, Greenwood's former club and academy product, is set to benefit financially from this transfer. At the time of his move to Marseille, United had negotiated a "sizeable sell-on fee," which is widely understood to be around 40% of any future transfer. This clause will now see the Premier League club receive a substantial sum from the sale to Fenerbahce.
Greenwood's career trajectory has been closely watched since charges of attempted rape and assault against him were dropped in February 2023. Following an internal inquiry, Manchester United decided against his return to the club. He subsequently spent the 2023-24 season on loan with Spanish side Getafe before his permanent transfer to Marseille. Fenerbahce, who finished second in the Turkish Super Lig for the fifth consecutive season, will now integrate Greenwood into their squad as they prepare to face Poland's Gornik Zabrze in the second qualifying round of the Champions League this month.
