England fly-half Fin Smith has declared that an under-par autumn campaign should prompt fundamental questions regarding the team's direction. Smith, 24, stated that the autumn fixtures will be a true test for the squad.

England's upcoming November schedule includes matches against Australia, Japan, and New Zealand on successive weekends. These will be followed by a play-off against a southern hemisphere opponent as part of the new Nations Championship finale.

Smith, who has started the last five Tests, acknowledged the need to adapt his game to England's more tactical, set-piece, and 'arm wrestle' style, which differs from Northampton's more attacking approach. He added that he has been given licence to influence the attack and lead meetings on how the team should play.

Meanwhile, Northampton Director of Rugby Phil Dowson, who has guided Saints to two Premiership titles and the 2025 Champions Cup final, has expressed an ambition to coach international rugby eventually. Dowson confirmed there has been no contact from the Rugby Football Union regarding such an opportunity.
