  • The Legal Aid Agency has published the final criteria for approved inquest training courses.
  • This follows the expansion of legal aid under the Public Office (Accountability) Bill.
  • Supervisors in the new inquest category of law must meet a legal competence standard, either through experience or an approved training course.

The Legal Aid Agency (LAA) has published the final criteria for approved inquest training courses. This follows a survey on previously published draft criteria, with responses now analysed.

The new inquest category of law, launched in response to the expansion of legal aid under the Public Office (Accountability) Bill, requires providers to employ a part-time equivalent supervisor in this category. These supervisors must meet a legal competence standard.

This standard can be met either through experience in a set number of inquest cases or by attending an LAA-approved inquest training course.

Why this matters: The publication of these criteria allows training course providers to understand the requirements for LAA approval and prepare their programmes.
