In the early hours of Saturday morning, a suspected shooting in Swindon's Gorse Hill area left a man in his 30s fighting for life in hospital. Wiltshire Police were called to St Paul's Street just before 9pm on Friday night, responding to reports of a firearm being discharged.
Upon arrival, emergency services found the victim suffering from what is believed to be a gunshot wound. He was immediately transported to hospital, where his condition remains serious but stable. A police cordon continues to restrict access across parts of St Paul's Street and Queens Drive as investigators work to piece together the events surrounding the incident.
The five individuals arrested in connection with the shooting are being held for questioning. Among them is a 51-year-old man, detained on suspicion of attempted murder. A 32-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to murder and being concerned in the supply of Class C drugs. Additionally, a 19-year-old man, a 33-year-old man, and a 16-year-old boy have all been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. The 33-year-old and the teenager also face suspicion of possession with intent to supply nitrous oxide for wrongful inhalation.
The Gorse Hill area, typically known for its residential character, has seen a significant police presence since the incident. Local residents are likely to experience ongoing disruption as officers conduct their inquiries and gather evidence. Wiltshire Police have appealed for anyone with information relevant to the shooting to come forward and assist their investigation.
Gun crime may be less prevalent in the UK compared to other nations, but its impact on communities cannot be overstated. Incidents like this serve as a reminder of the ongoing efforts by police forces to tackle violent crime and address the availability of illegal firearms.
