Counter-terrorism police are investigating a suspected bomb plot after armed officers discovered explosives in three vans parked near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire. The base is used by the US military for missions, including against Iran.
Five men were arrested in the Whelford area early on Sunday, 27 September, initially on suspicion of explosives offences. They were later further arrested on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act, contrary to section 5 of the Terrorism Act.
The arrests followed a 999 call from a member of the public who reported three suspicious vehicles travelling towards the airbase. The incident prompted the evacuation of 85 households in the Cotswolds village of Whelford to Cirencester leisure centre, and a 400m cordon was established around the vans.
Investigators are examining materials found in the vans, with an initial view that they were consistent with improvised explosive devices. Tests are ongoing to determine if the suspected devices were viable. Counter-terrorism police are investigating whether Iran is behind the suspected plot, though sources indicate that other motives, including a jihadist one, are not being ruled out.
The UK Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, described the incident as "deeply concerning" and stated that the government would "always take every step necessary" to protect people. The UK threat level remains at severe, meaning an attack is highly likely.
