Behind the façade of an unassuming flat in Glasgow's Lambhill area, a multi-million pound cocaine operation was secretly thriving. The sophistication of this illicit enterprise came to light during Operation Silhouette, a major police investigation that has finally brought five men to justice for their roles in a £4 million cocaine and money laundering ring.
The High Court in Glasgow heard that the group's activities spanned two years, with Ian McIntyre, 31, Kieran Doherty, 30, Calum McKelvie, 29, Jack Sanderson, 34, and Martin Tracey, 31, all pleading guilty to charges related to large-scale drug supply and money laundering. The men have been remanded in custody ahead of their sentencing next month.
Prosecutor Derick Nelson detailed the scope of the operation, explaining that the group was involved in a complex web of activities including the manufacture, division, and supply of cocaine, as well as the laundering of substantial cash sums. A property in Gartcosh, Lanarkshire, belonging to Doherty, was used as a 'safe house' for storing money, which facilitated the financing of their drug operations. Surveillance footage showed McIntyre regularly transporting weighted bags to and from this property, often receiving or delivering them to others later found with large sums of cash.
The investigation led to numerous significant seizures, including separate cash handovers totalling over £218,000 intercepted in May and June 2023. Other notable finds included £199,530 discovered in a Vauxhall Corsa on the M74 southbound, destined for a phone shop in Manchester, and £207,270 taped in bags in a car boot near Longforgan, Perth and Kinross. Drug seizures included 15 blocks of cocaine valued at £1.5 million found after a car stop near Dundee in September 2023, and another £290,000 consignment in a car fitted with a secret compartment.
The discovery of the drugs factory in a Lambhill flat in May 2024 was a pivotal moment in the investigation. Officers observed Sanderson and Tracey entering the block and, upon entry, immediately detected a strong chemical odour. Inside a bedroom, three men were found wearing gloves and industrial respirators. The room was equipped with equipment indicating a setup for processing cocaine with a potential street value of £1.47 million.
The culmination of the investigation involved raids at 13 different addresses linked to the gang on 29 November 2024, described as a 'day of action' by investigating officers. The arrests and subsequent guilty pleas highlight the coordinated efforts of law enforcement to dismantle sophisticated organised crime networks operating across Scotland and beyond.
