Flight attendants recommend wearing full-length trousers on planes due to hygiene concerns regarding exposed skin touching seats. They also advise sanitising seatbelts and wearing shoes in lavatories.

  • Flight attendants advise against wearing shorts, skirts, or dresses on planes.
  • Aircraft seats are reportedly exposed to various bodily fluids and diaper changes.
  • Deep cleaning schedules for aircraft vary by airline, with some occurring monthly or every 45 days.

Flight attendants are advising passengers to avoid wearing shorts, skirts, or dresses on planes due to hygiene concerns. Charity Nelms, a flight attendant with 11 years of experience, stated that no skin should touch the aircraft seat, urging passengers to wear full-length trousers.

Another flight attendant, Cher Killoguh, reported witnessing multiple diaper changes on seats during a single flight, including soiled ones. Aircraft typically receive a quick clean focusing on galleys, lavatories, and trash removal after each flight, with more thorough overnight cleans for long-haul planes.

Deep cleans, which involve removing seat areas and surfaces, are performed periodically and vary by airline. Singapore Airlines reportedly conducts them monthly, British Airways every 500 flight hours, and American Airlines every 45 days.

Nelms also highlighted seatbelts as highly contaminated surfaces, recommending they be wiped down upon boarding. Additionally, she advised against using lavatories in only socks, noting that floor liquid is not always water.

What this means for you: Consider wearing full-length trousers, sanitising seatbelts, and wearing shoes in lavatories when flying.
