Former Hereford FC player Martha Sharland is set to compete in two triathlon events at Dorney Lake, near Windsor, this Saturday. Sharland, who lost the ability to walk in October 2024 after being diagnosed with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND), will join two Paralympians in the Marvel's Celebrity Sprint Superhero Tri race.
The 22-year-old will also undertake the Full Superhero Tri, which includes a 750m open water swim, a 20km bike ride, and a 5km push/run. She will use a hired handcycle for the bike section and manually power her wheelchair for the final stretch, with her mother assisting during transitions.
Sharland has raised over £4,000, with funds going towards her own treatment and FND Hope, a charity supporting people with FND. She stated that she had to find and fund her own private rehabilitation due to a lack of local NHS support for her condition.
