Animal rights campaigners are attempting to turn a former KFC restaurant in Fleetwood, Lancashire, into the world's first Chicken Empathy Museum. PETA, a prominent animal rights group, has written to Landwood Property Auctions enquiring about the property and expressing interest in 'borrowing' or 'donating for educational purposes'.
The letter from Dawn Carr, PETA's Vegan Project Vice President, highlights the intelligence and emotional lives of chickens, which are often perceived as mere 'nuggets' or 'wings' in the UK food industry. Exhibits at the proposed museum would include interactive displays about chickens' sophisticated communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and family bonds.
The museum could also feature displays of slaughterhouse equipment, providing a stark contrast to the more uplifting aspects of chicken intelligence. Carr notes that mother hens have been known to communicate with their chicks before they hatch, and the chicks can even respond from inside the egg.
