Lord Ian Blair of Naunton's death at 71 marks the end of a distinguished but highly contested tenure as Metropolitan Police Commissioner. During his time in office, he navigated some of Britain's most trying moments, including the devastating 7/7 London bombings that killed 52 people in July 2005.
While Lord Blair was initially praised for his leadership following the 7/7 attacks, which tested the Met's operational capabilities, his legacy is forever tainted by the tragic shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes at Stockwell Tube station just two weeks later. De Menezes, mistakenly identified as a suicide bomber, became a symbol of public mistrust in the police and sparked a prolonged legal battle that ultimately saw the Met found guilty of endangering public safety.
Controversy also surrounded Lord Blair's introduction and deployment of Section 44 stop-and-search powers under the Terrorism Act, which civil liberties groups argued were disproportionately applied and ineffective.
