Prosecutors in the United States have accused Venezuela's former leader Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, of conspiracy to commit torture. These new charges were made public on Thursday and are in addition to previously denied drug-trafficking and weapons charges.
The accusations relate to the alleged torture of US citizens who were held in Venezuela while Mr Maduro was in power. Human rights groups in Venezuela and former prisoners have previously reported what they described as "systematic torture" in Venezuelan jails.
Mr Maduro, 63, and Ms Flores, 69, have been held in a Brooklyn detention centre since January, following their seizure by US forces in Caracas. Their trial is set to begin in June 2027.
