Consumer group Which? advises that mattresses should typically be replaced every eight to 10 years. However, a recent survey conducted in February 2026 found that nearly half of their members kept their mattresses for longer.
Key signs that a mattress may need replacing include discomfort, which was a primary reason Which? members cited for buying a new mattress. Sagging or sinking in places is another indicator, as mattress layers can compress over time, potentially affecting body support.
Age is also a factor, with mattresses over 10 years old showing signs of wear and tear such as damaged foam, protruding springs, or loose stitching. Furthermore, hygiene concerns arise as mattresses can absorb a significant amount of body moisture and accumulate dead skin over several years, creating an environment for dust mites.
To extend the life of a new mattress, Which? suggests following care instructions, regular cleaning, airing the mattress, and using a mattress protector or topper.
