Four workers have died after being struck by a train at Shin-Kanuma Station, north of Tokyo, authorities in Japan have confirmed. The collision happened around 10:46 local time (01:46 GMT) on Thursday morning.

Local media reported that the workers were removing weeds from the train tracks at the time of the incident. Police stated that three workers were trapped under the train, while one was on the platform, when emergency services arrived.

The railway company operating the Tobu Nikko Line has suspended train service due to the accident. The train involved was a limited express train, according to Japanese public broadcaster NHK.
