France and Spain are bracing for their fourth heatwave of the summer, with temperatures forecast to reach the high 30s and low 40s Celsius later today. This follows a period where progress was being made in battling destructive wildfires.
Sophie Brocas, prefect of Gironde and Nouvelle-Aquitaine, stated overnight that the fire in her region remained contained this morning, with several flare-ups quickly brought under control. In Spain, the main forest fire near Madrid also remained stable overnight, with no significant flare-ups reported.
Despite containment efforts, the return of high temperatures has prompted authorities to be on high alert for potential new fires. Sixty-five French departments have been placed on a high fire risk warning, and regional representatives in Madrid are warning of "extreme" fire danger in parts of the region.
