Artist France-Lise McGurn's new exhibition, "The Charm Offensive," has opened at Dundee Contemporary Arts (DCA). The show features dynamic paintings on an unprecedented large scale, grappling with themes such as grief, the passing of time, and modern womanhood.
For this exhibition, McGurn has made her extensive archive of source images visible to viewers. Film stills, magazine advertisements, and family photographs are blown up and printed on canvases, sometimes becoming obscured by paint or dominating the composition with a lo-fi, retro aesthetic.
The exhibition also includes a spatial element, with McGurn transporting a paint-covered sofa from her studio to the gallery. This aims to encourage visitors to settle into the space and spend time with the artwork. McGurn, who studied painting in Dundee, considers this show a homecoming.
