  • Over 2,400 arrests were made during violent incidents, including looting and arson.
  • Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu is holding an emergency cabinet meeting to address the violence.

Widespread protests across France over the weekend have resulted in violence, looting, and more than 2,400 arrests. Nearly half a million people participated in demonstrations on Saturday, protesting rising living costs, according to the Interior Ministry.

Businesses were looted and buildings set on fire in towns and cities, with videos showing flames engulfing Limoges City Hall and damage reported in Paris, Marseille, Lyon, and other locations. One protester in Paris died after suffering a cardiac arrest.

Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu is convening an emergency cabinet meeting today, Monday, to assess the violence and looting. The protests, which began last month over school staffing and facilities, gained traction on Saturday as other groups joined to protest the high cost of living.

The UK’s Foreign Office (FCDO) has not issued specific travel warnings related to the protests in France. However, it advises monitoring media, checking operator advice, and following local authorities' guidance due to frequent industrial action and demonstrations.

What this means for you: If you are due to travel to or within France, you should monitor the media, check your operator’s advice, and follow the advice of the authorities. The conditions for cancelling a trip depend on your holiday provider, as companies are not obliged to refund bookings if you want to cancel, and travel insurance may not cover cancellations due to safety concerns unless government advice changes.
