The UK government has announced a new partnership with the charity Missing People to provide improved support for families of British individuals missing both in the UK and overseas.

  • The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) will refer consenting families to Missing People's services.
  • Support offered includes peer networks and family events to help manage emotional strain.
  • The FCDO handles hundreds of cases annually involving people missing abroad.

The UK government has established a new partnership with the charity Missing People to enhance support for families of British individuals who are missing. This agreement will see the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) directly refer consenting families to Missing People's services.

The support available through this partnership will include engagement with trained family support teams, peer support networks, and family events. These services are designed to help families manage the emotional strain associated with a loved one going missing.

FCDO Minister for Consular, Stephen Doughty MP, stated that the partnership will provide enhanced support during difficult moments. Sophie Lapham, Director of Services at Missing People, highlighted that the collaboration will help families navigate unfamiliar systems and language barriers when a loved one goes missing abroad.

Why this matters: This partnership aims to ensure that families of British people missing abroad can more easily access tailored support services.

What this means for you: If you have a loved one missing abroad, the FCDO may now directly refer your family to Missing People for additional support.
