Frontier Airlines, the American ultra-low-cost carrier, has confirmed plans to integrate Starlink internet connectivity across its fleet, with the first aircraft expected to offer the service to passengers in 2027. This initiative forms part of a wider strategy by Indigo Partners, an investment firm with stakes in several budget airlines, to introduce high-speed, reliable Wi-Fi onboard their aircraft.
Starlink, developed by SpaceX, leverages a network of low Earth orbit satellites to deliver broadband internet access. Passengers on Frontier Airlines will reportedly benefit from gate-to-gate connectivity capable of supporting high-definition streaming and online gaming, a significant upgrade for an ultra-low-cost carrier.
Beyond Frontier, other airlines within the Indigo Partners portfolio are also set to adopt the Starlink technology. Wizz Air, the Budapest-based budget airline popular with British travellers, is poised to become the first European ultra-low-cost carrier to offer Starlink internet. Installation on Wizz Air aircraft is scheduled to commence next year, with an aim to equip all new-generation aircraft regardless of their route or destination.
The collective ambition for Indigo Partners' airlines, which also include Volaris, JetSMART, and Cebu, is to install Starlink on over 1,000 aircraft. This extensive rollout is being touted as a representation of “next-generation inflight connectivity,” combining the airlines' commitment to low fares with access to dependable Wi-Fi.
Jimmy Dempsey, CEO of Frontier Airlines, highlighted the investment in customer experience, stating, “Starlink transforms the onboard experience, giving customers the flexibility to work, stream, browse, and stay connected throughout their journey.” Bill Franke, Managing Partner of Indigo Partners, further emphasised that Starlink will provide their portfolio airlines with “reliable, high-speed connectivity, further enhancing the customer experience.”
Practical Advice for UK Travellers
For UK travellers planning future trips with airlines like Wizz Air or Frontier, the introduction of Starlink Wi-Fi could significantly enhance the inflight experience. While specific costs for accessing the Wi-Fi service have not yet been announced, budget airlines typically offer optional add-ons, so it's advisable to check pricing closer to your travel date.
Wizz Air operates numerous routes from UK airports to popular European destinations, including cities in Poland, Hungary, and Romania, often favoured by British tourists for short breaks and family visits. Frontier Airlines primarily serves destinations within the United States, Mexico, and the Caribbean from its US hubs, meaning UK travellers connecting to these services for onwards journeys could benefit.
Currently, there are no specific FCO travel warnings directly related to inflight Wi-Fi services. However, always check the latest FCO travel advice for your chosen destination regarding entry requirements, local laws, and safety. For travel to the US, British citizens generally require an Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA), costing $21 (approximately £16.50), or a visa, depending on the purpose and duration of their stay. European destinations served by Wizz Air are typically visa-free for UK citizens for short tourist stays. As always, comprehensive travel insurance is highly recommended for all international travel to cover potential medical emergencies, cancellations, or lost baggage.
