Fulham's pre-season friendly against Malaga ended in chaotic scenes on Wednesday, as the Premier League side left the pitch before a scheduled penalty shootout. Malaga's Eneko Jauregi subsequently converted a penalty into an empty net at Estadio La Rosaleda.
The drama unfolded after Malaga equalised in the final minute of normal time, with Jauregi converting a penalty to make it 2-2 after Fulham defender Calvin Bassey was penalised for handball. Following the equaliser, Fulham manager Alvaro Arbeloa was reportedly sent off for remonstrating with the referee and then headed down the tunnel with his players, who believed the match was over.
However, La Liga side Malaga remained on the pitch, expecting a penalty shootout to decide the winner of the Costa del Sol Trophy. With Fulham absent, Jauregi placed the ball on the spot and scored into an empty net, celebrating with his teammates.
Fulham later stated on X that both teams had agreed prior to the match that there would be no penalty shootout in the event of a draw. Malaga's post-match report on their website noted that while a shootout had been scheduled, Fulham left the pitch, claiming it was not included in the contract.
