London Underground passengers are set to benefit from high-speed mobile connectivity across the entire network by the close of 2024. This ambitious project will ensure that all Tube lines and stations, including tunnels, provide uninterrupted 4G and 5G signal, eliminating the long-standing issue of 'not-spots' for millions of commuters.
Currently, around 80% of the Tube network already boasts mobile signal, a figure that has steadily increased since the first sections went live. The Jubilee Line was the pioneering route, achieving full connectivity in March 2020. Since then, other lines have progressively been equipped, transforming the daily commute for many Londoners and visitors alike.
The extensive infrastructure upgrade involves the installation of over 2,000 kilometres of cabling, alongside thousands of pieces of equipment, deep within the Tube's tunnels and stations. This complex engineering feat is being delivered by BAI Communications, in partnership with Transport for London (TfL) and the major mobile network operators. The collaboration aims to provide a seamless experience, allowing passengers to make calls, send messages, browse the internet, and stream content throughout their journeys.
The introduction of full mobile coverage is expected to have a significant impact beyond just convenience. It will enhance safety and security by allowing passengers and staff to communicate more effectively in emergencies. Furthermore, it offers increased productivity for those commuting to work, enabling them to stay connected and work on the go, thereby making better use of their travel time.
This initiative represents a substantial investment in London's public transport infrastructure, aligning the Tube network with other major global cities that already offer comprehensive underground mobile connectivity. The final push to complete the remaining 20% of the network is now underway, with teams working around the clock to meet the year-end deadline.
