Transport for London (TfL) has announced a significant expansion of its underground mobile and Wi-Fi network, bringing 4G and 5G connectivity to new sections of the Elizabeth Line and Central Line. Passengers travelling on these routes can now stay connected while underground, enhancing their journey experience.
The latest rollout sees the Elizabeth Line gain full mobile coverage between Whitechapel and Stratford. This means commuters and visitors can make calls, send messages, and browse the internet seamlessly across this busy stretch. On the Central Line, connectivity has been extended to cover the tunnels and stations between Notting Hill Gate and Holland Park, and also between Queensway and Marble Arch, addressing long-standing connectivity gaps in the heart of London.
This development is part of a broader initiative to provide full mobile coverage across the entire London Underground network. With these latest additions, over 80% of the Tube network, including all stations and connecting tunnels, now offers 4G or 5G services. This extensive project is a collaboration between TfL and Boldyn Networks, a leading infrastructure company, working to deliver this crucial upgrade.
The introduction of consistent mobile coverage underground is expected to have several benefits. Beyond allowing passengers to stay in touch with family and friends, it significantly improves access to real-time travel information, emergency services, and entertainment during journeys. TfL highlights that enhanced connectivity contributes to a safer and more secure environment for passengers and staff, enabling quicker communication in case of incidents.
Future plans include extending coverage to the remaining sections of the network, with the aim of achieving near-complete connectivity across all Tube lines in the coming years. This ongoing investment in digital infrastructure underscores TfL's commitment to modernising the transport system and meeting the evolving expectations of its millions of daily passengers.
