London Underground passengers are set to benefit from full mobile phone coverage across the entire network by the end of this year, as additional sections of the Tube have recently been activated. This ongoing rollout marks a significant step towards eradicating the long-standing issue of 'not-spots' for commuters travelling across the capital.
The project, a collaboration between Transport for London (TfL) and Boldyn Networks, aims to provide seamless 4G and 5G connectivity even in deep tunnels and underground stations. The latest expansion means that a substantial portion of the network, including some of its busiest lines, now offers uninterrupted mobile service, allowing passengers to make calls, send messages, and access the internet throughout their journeys.
This ambitious infrastructure upgrade is designed to enhance the passenger experience, addressing a common complaint from Tube users. For decades, the underground nature of the system has made mobile connectivity challenging, but advancements in technology and significant investment are now making full coverage a reality. The initiative supports all four major UK mobile network operators – EE, Vodafone, Three, and O2 – ensuring a wide reach for most commuters.
The integration of mobile connectivity is part of a broader strategy to modernise London's transport infrastructure and keep pace with other global cities. Beyond convenience, reliable communication can also enhance safety and provide passengers with real-time travel information and updates, particularly during service disruptions.
As the year progresses, further sections will continue to go live, culminating in what is promised to be a fully connected network. This will mark a significant milestone for London, transforming the daily commute for millions of people who rely on the Tube for travel across the city.
