Gary Glitter's shadow looms large once more over London's streets, where a new alleged child sex offence has sparked fresh questions about the convicted sex offender's compliance with stringent licence conditions. The 79-year-old, formerly known as Paul Gadd, was interviewed by the Metropolitan Police in connection with an incident reportedly involving a girl under 14.
The details of this latest allegation remain undisclosed, but the investigation suggests that Glitter's actions may have breached the terms of his licence. Upon release from prison last February, he was placed on electronic tagging and subject to restrictions on internet use and contact with minors. However, just over a month later, he was recalled to prison for breaching these conditions, only to be released again in November 2023.
Glitter's long history of offending spans decades, including convictions for possession of child pornography in 1999 and the 2015 conviction for attempted rape, four counts of indecent assault, and one count of having sex with a girl under 13. This latter conviction earned him a 16-year sentence, which he served before being released from prison last year.
The renewed focus on Glitter's alleged misconduct will undoubtedly prompt scrutiny of the justice system's handling of high-risk offenders and efforts to safeguard vulnerable individuals. The Metropolitan Police have thus far maintained silence on the matter, adhering to standard procedure for cases involving ongoing investigations.
