  • The disruption stemmed from a National Air Traffic Services (Nats) technical issue.
  • Around 2,163 flights were impacted by the Nats system failure.

A passenger at Gatwick Airport, Kurtis Toy, 36, assisted easyJet customer service staff this week by relaying information to crowds following a technical glitch that caused widespread flight cancellations and delays. Mr Toy, a cyber security expert, offered to act as a "human megaphone" after observing staff struggling to communicate updates to passengers.

Mr Toy was among at least 300,000 people affected by the disruption, which prevented him from taking his flight from Gatwick to Aberdeen. The issue arose after National Air Traffic Services (Nats) issued an alert regarding a "technical issue."

Footage shared on TikTok showed Mr Toy providing updates to passengers, including information about luggage collection for cancelled flights. Around 2,163 flights were impacted by the Nats system failure, which marks the third significant incident of its kind in the last three years. The chief executive of Nats has been asked to provide a report to transport secretary Heidi Alexander regarding the disruption.
