Spain midfielder Gavi has surprisingly called for leniency for Argentina's Leandro Paredes, despite being thrown to the ground by the midfielder during a chaotic post-match brawl at the World Cup final. The contentious incident unfolded seconds after the final whistle blew on Spain’s hard-fought 1-0 victory over Argentina in New Jersey, a match decided by Ferran Torres’ extra-time winner.
Paredes, along with his teammate Nahuel Molina and Argentina coach Roberto Ayala, were central figures in the melee. Reports indicate that Paredes grabbed Spain's Eric Garcia by the throat before physically flinging Gavi to the ground by his bib. Molina is believed to have initiated the widespread scuffle by striking Spain captain Rodri, while Ayala reportedly struck Dani Olmo.
Despite the severity of the altercation, FIFA confirmed that Paredes was not shown a red card on the field. However, the global football governing body announced on Monday evening that its disciplinary committee has appointed a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to thoroughly investigate potential breaches of the FIFA disciplinary code stemming from the incident.
Speaking to El Partidazo de COPE, Gavi weighed in on the potential repercussions for Paredes, stating, “I don’t think (Paredes) should be suspended. I understand it’s not a good image for children, but I think there’s also that side to football, which is a bit more physical, more aggressive. The most logical thing would have been to send him off during the match, and that’s it. In the end, I think it’s all football, and it has to be that way.”
Argentina's coach Roberto Ayala also addressed his involvement, describing his altercation with Olmo as “more of a push than a punch” and pledging to apologise in person. He told Capital Radio in Valencia that his intention was to de-escalate the situation, adding, “It was a reaction to something that was said, but if I see Olmo, I’ll apologise to him in person.” Ayala also cited “a certain animosity” towards the Argentina team throughout the tournament.
