Great Britain's cycling team has powered to two gold medals on day two of the World Track Cycling Championships in Shanghai, China. The women's team pursuit squad, comprising Erin Boothman, Anna Morris, Josie Knight, and Millie Couzens, overcame an early deficit to defeat world champions Italy by more than five seconds in the final.
Matthew Bostock also clinched a gold medal, securing his first world title in the men's scratch race. The 29-year-old made his decisive move at the halfway point and maintained his lead to cross the finish line first. Bostock also earned a bronze medal for his participation in the earlier rounds of the team pursuit.
Further success for GB saw Henry Hobbs, Noah Hobbs, Ethan Vernon, and Ollie Wood secure a bronze medal in the men's team pursuit, triumphing over France in their ride-off. In individual events, Sophie Capewell, who previously won silver in the women's team sprint, advanced to the semi-finals of the women's sprint after two victories against China's Jiang Yulu. She will be joined in the last four by Emma Finucane, a sprint title winner in 2023 and 2024.
The championships have been preceded by the withdrawal of Matt Richardson from the GB squad amid reports of a misconduct investigation. British Cycling confirmed the 27-year-old Olympic medallist's removal but did not provide a reason. Richardson, who was expected to compete for medals, stated he would cooperate with the investigation into the allegations.
