Great Britain's Matt Brennan, 21, sprinted to victory in the second stage of the Vuelta a Espana on Sunday, marking his debut Grand Tour stage win. The Team Visma-Lease a Bike rider seized his opportunity in the final kilometres of the 214km ride from Monaco to Manosque.
Brennan's team-mate Wout van Aert and Tour de France winner Tadej Pogacar were initially expected to contend for the win. However, Van Aert was caught, and Pogacar opted to conserve energy, allowing Brennan to make his move.
Pogacar, of UAE Team Emirates, finished third in the stage and remains at the top of the general classification. He holds a nine-second lead over second-place Van Aert, with Brennan moving up to third overall, 10 seconds behind Pogacar.
The 21-year-old Englishman, who joined Team Visma-Lease a Bike's world tour squad in 2025, expressed his satisfaction, stating, "Hopefully it's not the last one, but it's nice."
Monday's third stage will take riders into the French Pyrenees, concluding with a mountain finish in Font Romeu near the Spanish border.
