The gaming world's enfant terrible has found redemption in the most unexpected of places – Broadway! Cliff Bleszinski, the mastermind behind the Gears of War phenomenon, has traded in his controller for a ticket to the Great White Way. The creative force behind some of the most beloved games of all time has taken on a new role: co-producer of the Tony-winning musical Hadestown.
Bleszinski's journey into theatre was not without its challenges, however. His studio, Boss Key Productions, had been struggling to stay afloat after the flop of LawBreakers, which, despite critical acclaim for its innovative mechanics, failed to capture the market share of Blizzard's behemoth Overwatch. The financial strain took its toll on Bleszinski, who described the heart-wrenching experience of watching his company's finances dwindle while desperately trying to maintain a façade of stability for his employees.
A last-ditch attempt to rescue Boss Key Productions saw it pivot to the battle royale genre with Radical Heights, an 'X-Treme Early Access' title plagued by technical issues and exploited by hackers. Despite a fleeting moment in the sun when Ninja played the game during a Fortnite server outage, Radical Heights ultimately failed to gain traction, leaving Boss Key Productions on the brink of collapse.
The summer of 2018 saw Bleszinski's world come crashing down around him as his studio officially closed its doors. The internet's reaction only added salt to his wounds, with many finding the situation 'hilarious'. But in the midst of this creative crucible, something unexpected ignited – a passion for Broadway.
As he found solace in an online friendship with Alex Boniello from Dear Evan Hansen, Bleszinski discovered the magic of Hadestown. Captivated by its unique blend of jazz and folk, he saw the potential for something truly special. And so, he joined forces as a co-producer, bringing his expertise to the table while allowing the creative team to take centre stage.
The rest is history – Hadestown went on to sweep the Tony Awards in 2019, claiming eight gongs including Best Musical. Bleszinski's involvement may have been behind-the-scenes, but it was no less crucial in helping bring this musical masterpiece to life.
