George Gibney, a former Irish Olympic swimming coach, is scheduled to be sentenced on Monday at the central criminal court in Dublin. The 77-year-old was convicted in July of 39 counts of indecent assault and one count of attempted rape.
The convictions relate to the abuse of four young female athletes during the 1970s and 1980s. This sentencing marks the culmination of a decades-long effort by victims, police, and journalists to track and extradite Gibney from the United States.
Gibney, who was Ireland's Olympic swimming coach in 1984 and 1988, had previously faced charges in 1993, but a supreme court ruling prevented a trial due to the time elapsed since the alleged offences. He subsequently moved to Scotland and then the US.
Fresh charges were brought between 2020 and 2022 after four victims made statements to Irish police, leading to his arrest and return to Ireland last year. Following his conviction in July, four victims provided impact statements to the court.
