Germany's Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, has accused the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) of aiming for "ethnic cleansing" with its "remigration" initiative. This accusation follows the AfD's recent victory in a state election in Saxony-Anhalt.
During a parliamentary debate, Merz stated that the term "remigration" is "nothing but a synonym for ethnic cleansing based on origin and skin colour." He argued that a campaign of mass deportations, as proposed by the AfD, would significantly harm the German economy, particularly by impacting skilled trades, care homes, hospitals, and restaurants.
The AfD won nearly 44% of the vote in Saxony-Anhalt but did not achieve an absolute majority. Its chief candidate, Ulrich Siegmund, is reportedly seeking support from other parties to become state premier. Merz also criticised the AfD for its opposition to military aid for Ukraine and alleged its alignment with Russia.
AfD co-leader Alice Weidel, speaking earlier, celebrated her party's election success, describing it as a referendum on Merz's leadership. She reiterated the party's goal to form a federal government, while national polls currently show the AfD leading with 28% to 29% support.
