Sulemana Abdul Samed, known as Awuche and Ghana's tallest man, has died at the age of 33. He passed away on Monday in a hospital in Tamale, a city in northern Ghana, after being admitted for infected leg sores.
Mr Samed was diagnosed with gigantism in his 20s and was 7ft 4in (223cm) tall when measured in 2023. Relatives believe he may have grown taller before his death. He had long faced complications from Marfan syndrome, a genetic disorder affecting connective tissues, which caused his unusually long limbs.
His medical bills were recently covered by Ibrahim Mahama, the brother of Ghana's President John Mahama. Despite doctors reporting he had responded well to treatment, Mr Samed died on Monday morning. His death has prompted an outpouring of grief, particularly in his home village of Gambaga, which he had made famous.
