Singer and actor Glen Hansard has died at the age of 56 following a motorcycle crash in Dublin. The incident, reportedly a single-vehicle collision, occurred in Lucan during the early hours of Wednesday, July 29.
The north Dublin artist was the frontman of The Frames, who formed in the 1990s and released six albums, including 2004's chart-topping 'Burn The Maps'. He also formed The Swell Season with Markéta Irglová, and their song 'Falling Slowly' from the 2007 film 'Once' won an Oscar.
Hansard's acting credits include playing Outspan Foster in the 1991 film 'The Commitments' and a lead role as "Guy" in 'Once'. His most recent solo album, 'All That Was East Is West of Me Now', was released in 2023, and his 2016 album 'Didn’t He Ramble' earned a Grammy nomination.
Police in West Dublin are appealing for witnesses to the crash to come forward. Hansard is survived by his wife, poet Maire Saaritsa, and their son Christy, born in 2022.
