Glenn Irwin, a 12-time North West 200 Superbike race winner, is making an exciting move to Michael Laverty's BMW-backed team for the 2027 British Superbike Championship. This change provides fresh motivation for the 36-year-old Northern Ireland rider, who will compete on an Alpha Racing-prepared BMW M 1000 RR for the GRYD Racing team, co-owned by Laverty and David Eltherington.
Irwin's 2026 season was described by him as "hard," failing to meet expectations due to injuries, crashes, technical issues, and difficulties with Ducati's new Panigale V4R. Despite a podium finish at Knockhill and success at the North West 200, he ended the series in 14th place.
The Carrickfergus rider, who has twice been a BSB runner-up, admitted to having doubts about his future after a disappointing campaign. However, the opportunity to join Laverty's team alongside Englishman Storm Stacey convinced him it was the fresh start he needed. The proven strength of BMW at the North West 200 circuit was also a significant factor in his decision.
