The Global Coalition's military mission against Daesh in Iraq, known as Operation Inherent Resolve, has concluded, marking a new phase for UK-Iraqi security cooperation. Forces involved in the mission, including UK personnel, have departed Iraq.
Following over a decade of operations, the Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) and the Kurdish Peshmerga have achieved the territorial defeat of Daesh in Iraq. They are now positioned to assume primary responsibility for the country's security.
The UK will continue to support Iraq's security and stability, working with Iraqi partners to develop an enduring bilateral defence partnership. This partnership is expected to focus on counter-terrorism cooperation, military education, capability development, and defence industrial collaboration.
Operation Inherent Resolve was established in 2014 with 90 partners to advise, assist, and enable partner forces in defeating Daesh. The UK's contribution, Operation SHADER, involved providing training and assistance to more than 111,000 members of the ISF, including over 21,000 Peshmerga, and conducting thousands of RAF sorties against Daesh targets.
