A luxury prison compound in Cibinong Prison in Bogor, near Jakarta, has been demolished following a public outcry. Indonesian lawmakers ordered the demolition on Wednesday, 30 September 2026.
The controversy arose after investigators reportedly discovered luxury facilities within the penitentiary during a surprise inspection on 23 September. These units allegedly contained amenities such as air conditioners, large televisions, refrigerators, sofas, and dining areas. Investigators also reported finding a gym, a golf simulator under construction, and luxury vehicles within the complex.
Officials stated that the residences appeared to house inmates, although prison officials claimed they were intended for staff. The incident has garnered widespread public attention and intensified scrutiny of Indonesia's prison system, which has previously faced allegations that wealthy or well-connected inmates can secure preferential treatment through bribery.
