Gloria Steinem, the American feminist and journalist whose activism helped advance women's rights globally, has died at the age of 92. A statement shared on her Instagram page confirmed she "passed away peacefully at her home in New York City, surrounded by some of the many who loved her."
The statement added that Steinem's "near-century on earth were years well-lived, and she continued working for equality until the very end." She was credited with bringing a feminist perspective into the mainstream through her journalism, public speaking, and activism.
Steinem authored nine books and campaigned on various issues, including domestic violence, female genital mutilation, and reproductive rights. She also supported causes such as Black Lives Matter and LGBTQ rights. In 1971, she co-founded Ms. magazine with Dorothy Pitman Hughes.
